Letterhead or your name and address
The Honorable <So and So.>
<district address (not Washington DC)>
Date
Dear Congressman/Senator______________,
I am writing to request a meeting with you
when you are in the district. I work with
<name of your organization>, a coalition of
bicycling interests based in <your town>.
We would like to talk with you about the
reauthorization of the federal
transportation bill. As you probably know,
ISTEA and TEA-21 have been very beneficial
to bicycling and walking interests.
Nationally, over $2 billion in federal funds
have been invested in bicycle and pedestrian
projects since 1991, a huge increase over
the $40 million in funding in the previous
20 years. Locally, the Enhancements program
has helped build numerous important
facilities, including (name a project or
two). We are part of a campaign called
America Bikes, focused on reauthorization,
and we would like to share our TEA-21 agenda
with you in hopes you will support it.
Also, as you prepare your list for high
priority project funding in the bill, we
hope that you consider including bicycle and
pedestrian projects. We can suggest several
projects which are of immense interest to
citizens in your district.
I will be joined in the meeting by a leader
from the local bicycle business community,
as well as a representative from the public
health community, (replace with names) so we
can cover both the economic aspects of
bicycling and the pressing need to improve
public health by encouraging physical
activity in our communities.
We look forward to meeting with you. Please
let me know when you are available. I can be
reached at <contact info here>
Sincerely,
<Your name>
