The National Transportation Objectives Act of 2009
This is a bill in the House (H.R. 2724) right now to establish national transportation objectives and performance targets for our transportation system.This bill establishes a national vision for the future of our transportation system, and recognizes the importance of non-motorized transportation as a part of that vision.
Its major objectives include promoting energy efficiency, ensuring environmental protection and ensuring the safety of all users while its performance measures include reducing vehicles miles travelled by 16 percent and tripling the usage of walking, bicycling and public transportation by 2030.
America Bikes endorses the National Transportation Objectives Act.
The bill recognizes the importance of walking and bicycling to our transportation system as a whole and it acknowledges the incredible societal benefits that would come from greatly increasing their use.
