Get your motorbike licence in the US
13 March 2018In order to get a motorbike license in the US, all you need is around $350 and several days of your time. After that, you will be able to fully enjoy everything that riding a motorbike has to offer.
Before you can hold your motorbike license in your hands, you need to go through several steps. First, you need to get a learner’s permit, then take a rider’s course, then learn things by the book, practice riding, and then finally take the test.
Let’s go through these steps and see what exactly they mean.
Getting a Learner’s Permit
This step means that you need to take a trip to the DMV’s and take a written test there on rules of traffic. Before you go to the DMV’s, you should study a handy booklet called the “Motorcycle Manual”. This is where you’ll find all the basics and the information that you need in order to pass the test.
At the DMV’s, you will be given a form with 20 multiple choice questions. In order to pass the test, you need to get at least 14 rights.
Rider Course
This is a step that takes two days to complete and usually costs around $350. Before the course, you will take a two-hour lesson where the basics of controls will be learned, and you will have a chance to do some basic riding.
During the two days, and after the end of the course, you will already have a good grasp of what riding a motorcycle means and whether you really want to do it.
By the Book
During this part of your process, you will have to take classes in a classroom on Saturday and Sunday. The classes usually last from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Half of that time is spent in the classroom, while the other half is spent riding and practicing what you have learned.
During this process, you’ll learn things such as the four steps in turning, how to lean properly when turning, or how to brake properly.
Riding
When it comes to the time to ride in real conditions, you will receive all of the equipment from the school. They provide a bike, a helmet, gloves, boots, and a jacket. During the whole process, there is an instructor who takes care of the learning steps.
First, you learn about the friction zone and riding very slowly and then you are expected to gradually increase your speed and your confidence and become ready for real-life situations.
Taking the Test
Finally, you need to do a road test before you can get your license. This test is a bit more difficult than the written test, but it is by no means hard. During the test, you need to successfully complete 4 steps. These are doing a U-turn, a quick stop, a swerve, and a regular turn.
If you make a mistake it is counted in points, so if you end up having more than 20 points, you fall the test. In case you fall off the bike, you fail the test right away.
